Enemy Brothers

The man is Dym, a particularly skilled English Pilot. The boy is Max, a child who was kidnapped by the Germans at a very young age. The setting is an English manor called White Priory, where Max must wait in the care of another family while Dym is. Mac repeatedly tries to escape from his “prison” in order to return to Germany and to the comfort of thoughtless conformity. But in every failure to escape, he is instead further exposed to the contrasting forgiveness of the Englishmen. The climax of Max's complex arc is a final, most promising avenue to freedom. Through the events that transpire from that opportunity, he shatters a mental lock, an inhibiting perspective. Where once he saw familial dedication as a matter of blood alone, he now sees Dym’s dedication as more substantial, something to be treasured. Enemy Brothers has a distinct feel that is cultivated by Dym’s strong dialogue and Max’s complex mental shift. These two elements come together to overcome the novel’s limitations and create a subpar but memorable experience.
